This post is for both you and me. It is a definite trap to always try to keep up with the latest and greatest gear and software used for our production work. But let me be frank---it's impossible! As I'm writing this post, some new contraption or software is being developed and presented to the public. So should you worry about staying current? Should you always try to make sure you are on top of the latest trend in audio production? Well let me ease your mind----Keeping up with the recording Joneses is not only NOT advised, it's simply not practical!
Gear updates - Go to any online store that sells gear and you will simply be blown away. I like to go to sites like Musicians Friend, or Sweetwater.com to stay abreast of what's out there, the cost, and what's hot! Notice that I didn't say I'm trying to purchase every piece of gear I see! You can easily become overwhelmed and feel like if you want to be tops in your field you must buy the latest and greatest gear---simply not true. Many times I will visit these sites to gain knowledge about gear, and read the many free reviews from other recording producers about what works and what sucks! Now understand you will have to make some initial investments with your gear setup---with a mixer, monitor speakers, recording device, etc. But you can find many of these items in pawn shops, garage sales, used music equipment stores, etc. Going back to my earlier Day 3 boot camp post about the importance of knowing your gear, use that as a starting point and get real familiar with what you use. Save your money, and stay informed. When the time is right to upgrade your gear---your equipment or your wallet will let you know. We may be starving artists, but we're smart too.
Computer updates - I mention this separate from gear because a lot of producers are now using their computers for full audio production. What used to take time with splicing tape, automation, editing, and mixing, can now be accomplished with one's computer. Technology can be wonderful when it works, but there will be a time to upgrade your computer software, upgrade your operating system, upgrade your recording software, or upgrade your entire setup. This year I went through an entire upgrade because I was able to make it happen (saved up some cash). You may not be in the same boat and that's okay! Upgrade your computer gear little by little. If your DAW (digital audio workstation) has a new upgrade and you're ready to upgrade, then do it! Again make sure you have learned the ins and outs of that software and you understand the benefits and changes of upgrading. Studio-room updates - Ever go into a professional studio-room? All the noise is deadened, the mixing console beckons to be manipulated, and the acoustic treatment on the walls gives the place that polished and pristine look. This is what you need---but let's get real---who can afford it and who has the time and energy to setup a space in their home just for that purpose? Well you would be surprised that many home recording producers have done just that! With a little creativity, planning, and thinking outside of the box---home producers have found ways to deaden a space and get that same professional sound.
