As you grow in your craft of home recording it is important to keep learning and developing. From gear and equipment, operating new computer systems, software, and even music theory, it is vital for you to get educated in your craft. I am always reading something about the recording world. In this post I want to share with you three of my top go-to resources for information.
Audio Post-Production in Your Project Studio - This book has been in invaluable source of information in my journey. Writer Casey Kim takes some of the mystery out of setting up and using the right tools in mixing and mastering home recordings and podcasts. She includes information about editing, software effects, mixing, monitoring, software mastering, running a studio as a successful business, and expert tips. She also teaches about audio editing techniques, how to mix properly, and how to use effect plug-ins. This has been one of my go-to books for running my studio. I learned so much in chapter eight about how to utilize compression. She really walked me step by step with understanding how the compressor works; how to balance the compressors output; how to properly set the threshold, properly setting the correct ratio; and in in-depth understanding of the attack and release functions. Her teaching style is very easy and conversational, so the book is a really good read.
The Recording Revolution with Graham Cochrane - This guy is one of my home recording heroes. Look him up on YouTube and you will find tons of tips and information that he shares freely. His humble nature, and his straight to the point approach with sharing information is unmatched. You could simply spend a week or even a month going from video to video and grow by leaps and bounds as a producer. I haven't found too many recording enthusiasts who simply wants all home recording producers to get better at their craft. This guy gets it! Sharing what you know and what you've learned with others will ultimately benefit you in the end. I'm serious---I have learned countless tips and tricks from his free videos! He constantly gives and gives and should be recognized for his distinguished service to our industry. You will find videos on gear, software, plugins, monitors, etc. You will also want to continue to learn from this guy, so I strongly suggest that you visit the Recording Revolution site and sign up for a few of his courses!
Make Music Now! - Mitch Gallagher is a genius in explaining all you need to put together a solid home studio. In his book he shares the tools and drive needed to get your music produced in a solid form. He introduces you to the basics of sound and understanding digital as well as analog music; He explains and guides you through the necessary components needed to put your studio together; He explains the importance of working your studio, making loop-based tracks, and putting music online. This is a rich-filled book that every recording producer should have in their library.
Recording producers understand the power of continually learning and getting better at their craft. I suggested three resources that have helped me to become a more skilled recording technician. Use the resources, or find others that are valuable to you. Just keep learning!
